How Much Concrete Do I Need? A Simple Guide for Slabs, Patios, and Driveways
Whether you are pouring a backyard patio, a garage slab, or a new driveway, one of the first questions is always the same: how much concrete do I actually need? Ordering too little means a cold joint and a headache. Ordering too much means paying for material you cannot use. Here is a simple way to get a solid estimate before you call your supplier.
The basic formula for ordering concrete
Concrete is sold by the cubic yard. To find the volume of a slab, measure the length, width, and thickness, convert everything to feet, and multiply them together. That gives you cubic feet. Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards.
Length (ft) x width (ft) x thickness (ft) = cubic feet
Cubic feet / 27 = cubic yards
Thickness in inches / 12 = thickness in feet
For example, a 10 ft by 10 ft patio that is 4 inches thick works out to 10 x 10 x 0.33 = about 33 cubic feet, or just over 1.2 cubic yards.
Add a cushion for waste and uneven ground
Subgrades are rarely perfectly flat, and forms can bow slightly under the weight of wet concrete. Most contractors add a modest extra amount to their calculated volume so the pour does not come up short. If you are unsure how much to add for your project, ask your supplier. They help people size jobs every day.
Think about thickness and the job itself
The right thickness depends on what the concrete will carry. A walkway does not need the same slab as a driveway that will see vehicles. Your contractor or local building requirements should guide the final specification, and the mix should be matched to the project.
