What to Have on Hand for a DIY Concrete Project: A Checklist for Homeowners
A concrete project goes much smoother when everything is on site before the work begins. Whether you are setting fence posts, building a small pad for a shed, or pouring a walkway, a little planning helps you avoid mid-project trips for the one thing you forgot.
Start with the plan
Measure the area and decide on the thickness so you know how much concrete you need.
Mark out the shape and check the ground for drainage so water has somewhere to go.
Decide whether you need ready-mix delivered or bagged material for a smaller job.
If you are working out quantities, our Quick Calculator and our simple guide to calculating cubic yards are a good place to begin.
Materials checklist
Concrete, ordered with a little extra margin so you do not come up short.
Gravel or a compacted base where the project calls for one.
Forms or lumber to hold the shape of the pour.
Reinforcement such as rebar or wire mesh, if your project calls for it.
Clean water for mixing, curing, and cleanup.
Tools checklist
Shovels, a wheelbarrow, and a hoe or mixing tool.
A screed board, float, and edging tool for finishing.
A level and a tape measure.
Work gloves, boots, and eye protection.
Get your site ready for delivery
If you are having ready-mix delivered, clear a path for the truck and have your forms and base finished before it arrives. We cover this in more detail in our post on preparing for your pour.
